Billed as, An Impromptu Affair, on Sun 24 Feb 2008, 3PM at the Lighthouse Event Centre concert hall, Eric’s music will share the bill with Dvorak, Mozart, and Peter Warlock. The Pavao Quartet with renowned UK saxophonist Iain Ballamy will play The Stones of Carnac, a composition that Starr wrote with Iain in mind. “I’ve been a fan of Iain’s music since 1987. He has the innate ability to push the often self-imposed boundaries of genre and style creating his own new musical syntax rooted in rich and complex melodies. The Stones of Carnac exists within this lexicon yet the substrate image is fundamentally based in the orchestration of a string quartet.”Starr is no stranger to the classical world, having performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic orchestra and composed for the Shakespearean stage in Manhattan, though he’s most often seen as a New York jazz and rock performer. “I guess I’m lucky that I’ve found opportunities to express myself musically in what appears to be so many different ways, but honestly, it’s all part of a larger circular whole in my mind. Most of all, I appreciate the opportunity to work with so many talented people.” Asked about what it was like to hear his piece played by the Pavao Quartet, Starr replied, “When I’m composing, I can hear the strings playing in my mind, and I made a synthesized version of the score. However, seeing and hearing the music played by gifted musicians allows the music to transcend to another level.”Other works that evening will include performances by Alison Farr (piano), Philip Dukes (viola) and Eamonn Dougan (baritone) playing: Dvorak Piano Quintet, Mozart G Minor Viola Quartet and songs by Peter Warlock. Sun 24 Feb 3pm in the Concert HallClick Here, then select Music on the top left menu, and scroll down for seating and ticket information.
