Eric and Iain start this Ray Noble classic as a duet before the whole band cooks through several raucous choruses. Not known for recording extended solos, Eric gives his Regal Tip brushes a workout in this encore romp.
“Such is Life,” is destined to be on Eric’s next album. This dramatic blues features piano legend, Andy LaVerne, and Iain Ballamy on saxaphone.
The New Tralf, Buffalo, NY December, 2004
In February of 2003, 2 days before the release party at Lincoln Center, Eric and a skeleton crew appeared on the Joey Reynolds show, originating from WOR high over Times Square. Nelson and Eric were joined by Marc Schonbrun on Guitar and Iain Ballamy on tenor. This was the first time Eric had ever performed with Ballamy in public, and their only rehearsal was cooked up in the break room. So amped on stale coffee and/or jet lagged, this quartet did a beautiful rendering of Eric Starr’s bossa nova, Salta.
Also in the broadcast studio was one of Reynolds’ old friends, CEO of Warner Sunset Music, Hollywood music supervisor and legendary singer, Gary LeMel, who was out promoting his own jazz CD, The Best of Times, which was produced by Bobby Colomby and featured an appearance by Chris Botti. Gary even has two lines in this clip. “Ubiquitous” in reference to Kenny Ascher, and “Terrific” in reference to the music… thanks Gary and thanks to Joey Reynolds for playing host!
QUIETUDE
Otherwise unreleased, Quietude is one of Eric’s compositions that came after the release of SHE. This is an excerpt from the upcoming feature length documentary film, “Tender Night: The Eric Starr Group On Stage and In the Studio.”
TENDER NIGHT
Tender Night starts as a deceivingly simple waltz, then climbs to cascading peaks.
Recorded in New York and London, Eric’s debut album, SHE, is rich with compelling tunes and precise orchestrations. As brothers working together, Eric and Nelson share mutual respect, but often dispense with pleasantries that encumber or endanger other artists. Take a peek into the vocal booth as the recording of the CD lays the groundwork for future performances.
